Bay Baseball Bites - Oakland Edition # 4

Since I had such great luck with the food trucks the first time around, my next time at the Coliseum I came back to Championship Plaza to see what exciting food trucks they had to choose from this time!

On this second visit to the food trucks at the Coliseum (which was during the Battle of the Bay series) there were six food trucks to choose from. SIX!

So many options, but also so many fans from the other side of the bay made their way to the Coliseum over this weekend so it made complete sense that there were many more food truck options available to the many fans in attendance. Food trucks in attendance this day were Southern Comfort Kitchen, Golden Gate Gyro, Fresh Catch Poke, Treats by the Bay, Rosie’s Mexican Food, and iLava Hawaiian Barbecue.

Treats by the Bay - A One Stop Shop!

With the name ‘Treats by the Bay’ I am sure that you are expecting me to say that I just loaded up on sweets and desserts as my ballpark meal and called it a day.

You would be incorrect.

Treats by the Bay, obviously does have a lot of sweet things to enjoy such as mini donuts and different varieties of soft serve but they also offer a couple of Banh Mi sandwiches to choose from. Once I saw that I could get some sustenance and cater to my sweet tooth in one place (also meaning that I would only have to wait in one line during a very busy weekend at the ballpark) I was all in on Treats by the Bay.

Before I even get into what I got from Treats by the Bay, I want to acknowledge how efficient and creative their ordering process was. Treats by the Bay has a window towards the back end of the truck which is where you order, like you typically do with any other food truck. However, there was no person standing there to take your order. There was an iPad hanging out the window for you to select the items for your order, a card reader ready for you, and then a receipt printer that gave you the number for your order that would be called out once it was ready. For calling out orders, at the window of the passenger door to the truck they had installed a little microphone and speaker system for order call-outs and handed out the orders through that window. This setup was so simple and easy and I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t seen it done before. It allows the people in the truck to just worry about processing the orders because each customer themselves placed the orders as they liked. I thought this system was genius and would love to do it at other trucks if they took up this service model.

Now onto the food that I got from Treats by the Bay. This was my one-stop shop for food at this ballgame and I had gone with the grilled pork Bahn Mi sandwich paired with a “small” serving of Dole Whip.

The Bahn Mi sandwich was very good and filling. It was so filling that I couldn’t even finish it because I had to save room for the Dole Whip that I got (Dole Whip is always priority #1). Hope you enjoy the cross-section photo of this sandwich and see that it was filled well and was paired with some medium-crusty bread.

Like I just said, Dole Whip is priority number one when it is around and I get to enjoy it. I have had some lack-luster Dole Whip at times when the consistency is too runny and just melts right away. This Dole Whip was great, held its shape, and didn’t melt too much as I was enjoying my sandwich first (paired with some bites of Dole Whip along with way). Plus, given that what I ordered was the “small” serving of Dole Whip I can’t even imagine how much bigger they get from there. You also have the option to make it a Dole Whip float if you so choose.

I really wanted to try out the mini donuts from here but did not have the appetite this day to take on another food. I really wish I had because both the sandwich and Dole Whip were excellent. My meal from Treats by the Bay left me with a contently filled full belly to then sit back, relax, and enjoy a rivalry baseball game.
