Time to start talking about the food truck experience at the Coliseum!

The food trucks on Championship Plaza on August 6, 2021

My second visit to the Coliseum was when I figured out how to get to the food trucks. I was on a mission to figure it out how to get there and try out this unique food experience. If you are as lost about where the food trucks are located as I was the first time around, be sure to check out the set of directions outlined in this post.

Once arriving on the Championship Plaza I took in the scene and checked out my options of food trucks. It seems that there are usually three or four food trucks that arrive for each home game and that the selection of food trucks rotates between about twenty different ones. On that day, my options were Rosie’s Mexican Food, iLava Hawaiian Barbecue, or Southern Comfort Kitchen.

All of the options sounded good to me and each truck had pretty similar lines and wait times it seemed at the time that I arrived but in the end I decided to give Southern Comfort Kitchen a try.

Southern Comfort Kitchen Food Truck - Fried Chicken Sandwich

The Southern Comfort Kitchen food truck drew me in this day with their comforting eats and their surprisingly extensive menu. They were offering a lot of different entrees out of their truck which I was not expecting from the couple of people running the show in the truck. You can take a look at their full menu of offerings here and I believe they had at least half of these offerings at their truck this day. Even with all of the variety and good sounding things that they had, I kept it simple and ordered a fried chicken sandwich. When I ordered, I was asked if I wanted to add on fries but I declined and I am sure glad that I did because I would not have had the room to pair fries with this sandwich. The sandwich was so large and tasty that I couldn’t completely finish it on my own (but more on that in a minute).

I ordered the fried chicken sandwich because that is what sounded good that day and since I was ordering it from a food truck, the full description of the sandwich was not provided like it is on their full menu which details the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich as:

Two pieces of chicken breast soaked in buttermilk, Louisiana hot sauce, and our blackened seasoning. Fried golden, served on a french bun with a red wine vinegar cole slaw infused with lemon and cilantro, complemented by two slices of pickles. Topped with our signature old bay garlic aioli.

So you can say I was a little shocked once my number was called from the truck and I picked up my food and the top of the takeout container couldn’t even stay shut because this sandwich was so large. By the time my food was ready, more people were mingling and checking out the food trucks. As I was walking by the line of people waiting to order at Southern Comfort Kitchen I heard a man tell his partner “I think she got the chicken sandwich and it looks huge.” I stopped and confirmed that I did get the chicken sandwich to this gentleman and his partner, showed them my sandwich, and the man then told me that seeing that sealed the deal on what he was going to be ordering.

I loved that gentleman’s response and I had a similar one as I was waiting for my food. I saw a person order ahead of me that got the jambalaya and that gave me second thoughts about my ordering choice. But once I had a bite of this delicious sandwich I had zero regrets. This fried chicken sandwich falls into one of the top spots of a fried chicken sandwich that I have gotten anywhere. It is definitely the best one that I have ever had out of a food truck, but this one stands up on its own outside of the food truck world and was absolutely spectacular! The slaw and sauces were the perfect compliments to the chicken and even though this was an extremely large sandwich it stayed together the whole time I ate it. The sandwich was a little too big for just me to eat, so I had to let go of one of the pieces of chicken halfway through the sandwich to make it more manageable for the size of my appetite. My boyfriend happily got to enjoy that second piece of chicken and agreed that it was absolutely above average fried chicken. (He also supported the food trucks this day and got a burrito from Rosie’s Mexican Food, which he enjoyed.)

All in all, this was a strong showing by the food trucks to start. Because this fried chicken sandwich was so good I know I will be tempted to go back to Southern Comfort Kitchen for it again (or try out that jambalaya). However, this proved that these are top-tier food trucks that get to sit out on the Championship Plaza and I cannot wait to experience more of them!
