Yoga with Cats

Yoga with KittyI like yoga and I like cats. And there is a way to combine those two things at a cat cafe in Seattle and it's amazing! If you like both of those things and want to have a fun doing both at the same time, you need to check out the yoga class offerings at Seattle Meowtropolitan.

Yoga with cats is exactly what it sounds like. When I was explaining to one of my coworkers that I was going to be doing this one evening another one of my coworkers overheard and wanted to make sure he heard me correctly in what my night's plans were. I know, the idea of doing yoga with cats sounds a little crazy but it was a delight to do.In a yoga with cats session, there is a class of up to 12 members and a yoga instructor leading you through a class much like you would at a traditional yoga studio. The only difference is that you are practicing in the large room at a cat cafe with up to 25 different cats wandering around making themselves at home (and sometimes at home on your yoga mat). Some of the traditional yoga moves get fun cat pun inspired names in this room but you flow through the movements like usual while some feline friends are going about their day. There's no denying that practicing yoga around cats isn't distracting so the instructor does add in some breaks in the class for participants to give the kitties some treats, pets, and extra attention.
As well as being a cute distraction, the cats can also create extra challenges in your yoga practice. Sometimes a cat sees the opportunity when you're doing a plank to make themselves at home in the middle of your yoga mat and you have to hold it longer and be more creative with how you get out of the pose so you don't collapse down on your new furry friend. But the cats can also make your practice a little easier and force you to slow down a bit more, like this guy did to me:Yoga with CatsThis cat saw the opportunity of the second the class moved to start yoga movements on our back to jump on top of me and force me to slow down my practice and enjoy his presence. This cat's name is Clouds and he is one of the resident cats at the cafe so he's use to people doing yoga in his home all the time and wants to make sure yogis feel at home with him too.Clouds made my yoga with cats experience extra special but overall the whole class experience is so unique and fun that I can't recommend it enough. There's something about being surrounded by some furry friends while doing something I already enjoy that made it so much better and so much more relaxing and rewarding of a yoga practice.
If you're interested in trying out yoga with cats yourself, Seattle Meowtropolitan hosts classes four times a week, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as on Saturday and Sunday mornings. And if yoga isn't really your thing but you still want to enjoy some time with cats at the cafe, you can book times to hang out in the cat room with all of these great cats and maybe even find yourself a kitty that needs to find a fur-ever home 😺
