Airport Runway Run

It’s not every day that you need FAA clearance before you go out for your run, but this was one of those days.

Running on the San Carlos Airport taxiway

Huh?!?! FAA clearance for a run? Did you think that was just for airplanes?

Well, it’s needed when a fun run course takes over the runway and taxiway of an airport before the race can begin, which lead to a slightly delayed start time to this fun run but it was worth the wait.

The fun run that I am talking about was the 5th annual Hiller Aviation Museum Airport Runway Run at the San Carlos Airport. It was offered in 10k, 5k, and 2k lengths to accommodate all ages in this unique opportunity to get on an airport runway on foot.

I participated in the 5k distance and most of the race looped around on the taxiways and runway, with a bit of the race following a shoreline path on the edge of the airport. One of the nice surprises about running on the runway and taxiways was just how wide they are. It’s not something I thought about when I signed up for this run. I was just thinking about how cool to would be to run where airplanes usually are. But with the wide taxiways and runway, it was a nice change from the usually crowded single lane of a street that’s blocked off for a fun run course. Being on the runway and taxiway meant that there was lots of room to give space and to pass your fellow runners (or to not feel bad when you stop to talk a photo).

With such a unique setting for this 5k, it is definitely a fun run that I will not forget!
